One hundred years ago, today . . . Aug. 19, 1903 . . .

Orville turned 32 years old.

The brothers were hard at work on their flying machine and making plans to test it in Kitty Hawk in just a few months, but they always took time to recognize significant milestones like birthdays.

While they enjoyed their work, they knew the importance of relaxing. Black and white photos of Orville and Wilbur in starched collars, ties and coats make them look exceptionally serious and hard working, but the brothers knew how to relax.

Ever faithful to a promise made to their Bishop father not to work on Sundays, they spent leisure time reading, playing music, writing letters and sharing time with friends and family. They developed an interest in photography that proved invaluable in documenting their experiments.

In Kitty Hawk they roamed the beaches collecting shells and looking at plants and animals. They sang and paid visits to the local lifesaving station.

They gave gifts on Christmas and for birthdays and were always able to find a balance between work and relaxation, between family demands and personal interests. While work progressed on the new machine, birthdays celebrations were equally important.

Just as it takes balance to control a bicycle, the brothers instinctively knew that balance was necessary to successfully control a glider.

A similar balance is necessary for us to experience all life has to offer. Work, family, hobbies, passions - all contribute to a well-rounded and enjoyable life.

To soar to success our own way, we must find the balance in life that is uniquely ours.
